A tragic incident occurred at the Marana Regional Airport in Arizona on Wednesday, leaving two people dead after two small planes collided midair.
The planes, a Lancair and a Cessna, each had two people onboard, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
What Happened?
The collision happened around 8:30 a.m. local time, while the planes were upwind of runway 12.
Preliminary information from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reveals that the Cessna landed safely, but the Lancair crashed into the terrain near runway 3, causing a post-impact fire.
Investigation Underway
The FAA and NTSB have launched an investigation into the incident, with NTSB investigators already on their way to the scene.
Two more investigators are also en route to assist with the probe.
The Marana Regional Airport, an uncontrolled field without an operating ATC control tower, relies on pilots to maintain safe distances from other aircraft using a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency to announce their positions.
