Finally, Australia’s gorgeous beaches and national parks are about to become accessible to everyone!
A massive new funding plan is set to break down barriers for wheelchair users and people with complex disabilities.
A Personal Story of Beach Access
Shane Hryhorec knows firsthand how it feels to lose access to the beach. After breaking his neck in 2007, he thought his beach days were over. But instead of accepting this, he’s been fighting to make beaches accessible for everyone.
What’s Changing? $17.1M Worth of Improvements!
Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth is dropping some amazing news: a whopping $17.1 million will be spent over four years to make nature accessible to all. Here’s what we can expect:
- All-terrain wheelchairs
- Special beach matting for easier sand access
- New accessible paths
- Better infrastructure for water access
- Improved park trails
Where Can You Find Accessible Beaches Right Now?
Some awesome spots are already leading the way:
- Palm Cove Beach, Queensland
- Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast
- Bondi Beach, NSW
- Sorrento Beach, WA
- Henley Beach, Adelaide
No More Excuses!
“The beach is for everyone,” says Shane Hryhorec, and he’s tired of hearing local governments claim they can’t afford accessibility upgrades. With this new funding, there’s no excuse for beaches to remain inaccessible.
What This Means for You
Whether you’re a local or tourist with accessibility needs, this is huge news! State and territory governments can now apply for funding to make their natural spaces more inclusive.
As Minister Rishworth puts it, “People with disability have the same rights to be included in our communities.”
This new initiative isn’t just about access – it’s about making sure everyone can enjoy Australia’s stunning natural beauty, regardless of their abilities. ♿
