‘Fears for Their Lives’: Bondi Beach Gunman’s Family Targeted in Death Threats and Intimidation Campaign
- Naveed Akram’s family, including his mother and siblings, have been subjected to death threats, stalking, and intimidation since the Bondi Beach shooting.
- The family lives in “constant fear” for their safety, with incidents including eggs being thrown at their house, pork chops being thrown into the driveway, and abusive text messages.
- Their lawyer is seeking suppression orders to protect their identities and addresses, citing the risk of vigilante attacks.
The family of Bondi Beach gunman Naveed Akram has been living in a state of constant fear since the devastating shooting that claimed 15 innocent lives.
According to their lawyer, Richard Wilson SC, they have been targeted in a campaign of death threats, stalking, and intimidation, with their safety at risk from potential vigilantes.
The 24-year-old Akram faces nearly 60 charges, including 15 counts of murder and one of committing a terrorist attack, over the shooting which took place at a Jewish event on December 14.
His father, Sajid Akram, was killed by police during the incident. The outpouring of public grief and outrage has been unprecedented, and Akram’s family has become a target for those seeking revenge.
In a bid to protect his clients, Wilson has applied for court orders to prevent the publication of their names, images, and addresses. He argues that the information is irrelevant to the criminal case and would only serve to put them in greater danger.
The family has already experienced a series of harrowing incidents, including eggs being thrown at their house, pork chops being thrown into the driveway, and anonymous, abusive text messages.
Within a fortnight of the shooting, the family heard someone “banging loudly and aggressively” on the front door at night, and saw several large men standing outside.
They had left by the time police arrived. The mother described vehicles driving past the house and yelling death threats, while Akram’s brother said he received a WhatsApp message with a death threat.
The brother once returned home from work to find a bottle with what he believed was urine in the front yard.
The mother, in her affidavit read out in court, described being afraid of what will happen each time there is more publicity about the case. “We live in constant fear that in any moment someone may harm us or set our house on fire,” she wrote.
“I fear for my life and the lives of my children.” The family cannot afford to move or hire security, leaving them vulnerable to further attacks.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The targeting of Akram’s family raises serious concerns about the safety of those associated with individuals involved in terrorist attacks. Security analysts warn that the incident highlights the need for greater protection measures for families of terrorists, who often become targets for revenge attacks.
Law enforcement insiders warn that the lack of effective protection for these families can lead to further violence and instability.
Industry observers believe that the incident also raises questions about the effectiveness of current laws and policies in place to prevent such attacks.
The fact that the family has been subjected to death threats and intimidation despite being innocent bystanders highlights the need for a re-examination of our approach to counter-terrorism and community safety.
In a country that prides itself on its multiculturalism and tolerance, the targeting of innocent families is a stark reminder of the dangers of extremism and the need for greater vigilance.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the Bondi Beach shooting, it is essential that we prioritize the safety and security of all individuals, regardless of their association with terrorist activities.
