The streets of Melbourne’s north were left reeling after a paramedic was brutally stabbed in the neck and slashed in the face in a shocking daylight attack.
The 11am assault, which was captured on video, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the community and emergency services leaders.
According to police, the paramedic, who was on duty and ordering a coffee at a café on Broadway at Reservoir, was allegedly attacked from behind by a 32-year-old man.
The attacker, who got out of a small red car, stabbed the paramedic and then fled the scene, leaving behind a blade from a knife. A member of the public rushed to help the paramedic, who also called for assistance over the radio.
The alleged attacker was arrested at a property on Winter Cr in Reservoir just before 1pm and has been charged with attempted murder. The paramedic, a father of a young child, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering from the attack.
This senseless act of violence has sent shockwaves across the emergency services community, with Ambulance Victoria chief executive Jordan Emery condemning the ‘unprovoked and random’ attack.
‘It is absolutely disgraceful. It continues across all Australian jurisdictions and it must stop now,’ Emery said.
‘My people behind me have had a gutful of this violence and it is completely unacceptable that those people who spend their lives caring for others, who give so much to care for their communities, continue to face violence on a daily basis.’
Emery highlighted the psychological toll this attack will have on the paramedic and his colleagues.
‘In years to come, people will continue to be frightened by this appalling incident and whether they are truly safe coming to work every day for the purposes of providing care to all of you,’ he said.
‘When they are confronted with this violence, it makes them ask a fundamental question, what am I doing this for? Am I safe to keep doing this?’
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
This attack is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by emergency services workers every day. It highlights the need for increased safety measures and support for those on the frontlines.
The Victorian Ambulance Union is calling for the offender to face the full force of the law, with secretary Danny Hill saying, ‘This is a vile and chilling attack on one of our paramedics and it must never be tolerated.’
Security analysts say this incident raises concerns about the safety of emergency services workers and the need for increased security measures. ‘This attack highlights the risks that paramedics and other emergency services workers face every day,’ said one analyst.
‘It’s essential that we take steps to protect them and ensure they can do their jobs safely.’
Law enforcement insiders warn that this incident is part of a broader trend of violence against emergency services workers. ‘This is not an isolated incident,’ said one insider.
‘We’re seeing a growing number of attacks on emergency services workers, and it’s something we need to take seriously.’
As the paramedic recovers from his injuries, the community is rallying around him and his family. The Victorian Ambulance Union has thanked the bystander who intervened to help, and confirmed they were not injured.
