The teenager, who appeared via video link from a detention centre, faced the Children’s Court in Cairns and pleaded guilty to 15 charges, including five counts of rape, two counts of armed robbery in company, and two counts of deprivation of liberty.
The court heard that the teenager and his two co-accused, all of whom were armed, broke into the couple’s home in Manunda, Cairns, in the early hours of February 21, 2025.
The woman and her partner were awoken in their bedroom, and the teenager and one of his co-accused raped the woman multiple times in different parts of the home.
The third boy allegedly detained the woman’s partner in the bedroom while the rapes took place.
During the ordeal, the court heard that weapons were held to the woman’s face, and the trio stole her wallet, mobile phone, and watch. The rapes ended when one of the other boys told the teenager it was time to leave the house.
The court also heard that the trio had broken into the same home earlier in the night, while the occupants were not home, and stole headphones.
The teenager’s guilty plea comes as the community grapples with the shocking nature of the crime.
The court heard that the teenager and his co-accused had also committed other offences throughout the night, including breaking into an Edge Hill grocery store and attempting to steal a woman’s car from another home.
The two boys accused of raping the woman are due to face court on July 14, when a date is expected to be set for a joint sentencing hearing.
The third boy, accused of detaining the man in the bedroom, has also been committed to face trial but is yet to enter pleas. He is due to face court on July 13.
