The desperate search for missing Horsham man Neville Nicholson has entered its second week, with police and his family growing increasingly concerned for his safety. The 47-year-old was last seen leaving his family home on Puls Place, Horsham, about 4pm on Wednesday, June 17.
Newly-released CCTV footage shows Mr Nicholson walking along Dimboola Road about 5pm that same day, sparking urgent pleas for public help.
Mr Nicholson lives with a medical condition, which has heightened concerns for his well-being. His family, including his wife and youngest daughter, are beside themselves with worry.
“He’s a bit more of a house person,” his son Aiden said. “He doesn’t have a bunch of friends, he doesn’t go out too often.
He likes spending time at home talking with the family and playing video games and watching stuff with us, which makes it very challenging to think of where he may have gone.”
Police and State Emergency Service crews have conducted a line search of the area where Mr Nicholson was last seen, but so far, there have been no signs of him.
His backpack was found beside the railway line on Dimboola Road, containing his phone. The discovery has only added to the mystery surrounding his disappearance.
“We’re all just very concerned and just hoping that he’s safe,” Aiden said. “He doesn’t just pop up and leave without telling us where he’s going … which has made us very worried.”
As the search continues, police are urging residents in Horsham to search their properties, sheds, and outdoor buildings for Mr Nicholson. “Investigators are urging local residents to search their backyards, sheds and any outbuildings where he may be taking shelter,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
The local community has already been helpful and supportive, with many offering assistance in the search efforts.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The disappearance of Neville Nicholson highlights the importance of community involvement in missing persons cases. In a country where vast distances and rugged terrain can make searches challenging, every pair of eyes and ears counts.
As the search for Mr Nicholson continues, it serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and the public.
Security analysts say that cases like Mr Nicholson’s underscore the importance of medication management and support for people living with medical conditions. “When someone with a medical condition goes missing, it’s a high-risk situation,” a security expert said.
“It’s crucial that families and caregivers are aware of the risks and take steps to mitigate them.”
Law enforcement insiders warn that the first 48 hours in a missing persons case are critical. “The longer someone is missing, the more challenging it becomes to find them,” a police source said.
“That’s why it’s essential for the public to be vigilant and report any information, no matter how minor it may seem.”
As the search for Neville Nicholson continues, his family remains hopeful that he will be found safe and sound. “We just hope that my dad is OK and that he comes home safe,” Aiden said.
Anyone with information on Mr Nicholson’s whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or the Horsham Police.
