Tsunami Fears as Powerful 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes off Indonesia, Triggering Widespread Panic
- Indonesia’s Molucca Sea region rocked by massive earthquake, sparking tsunami warnings across the region
- Aftershocks as high as magnitude 5 reported, with tsunami waves reaching 0.3m in West Halmahera and 0.2m in Bitung
- At least one person killed, several injured, and widespread damage reported as buildings collapse and power is cut
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Indonesia, sparking widespread panic and triggering tsunami warnings across the region.
The quake, which hit early today, had a depth of 35 kilometres and its epicentre was 127km west-north-west of Ternate, Indonesia, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS reported aftershocks as high as magnitude 5, and Indonesia’s meteorology agency reported tsunami waves in West Halmahera at 0.3m high and Bitung at 0.2m high.
The quake’s impact was felt across the region, with reports of widespread damage and panic.
In Manado, a resident told Reuters that people ran out of their houses in panic, with items falling off shelves and power being cut. A damaged building was also reported in the area, with one person killed by falling rubble.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said teams were still inspecting buildings to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether there had been any further fatalities.
“We are still collecting data to confirm the number of victims and the damage in each location,” said BNPB Head Abdul Muhari.
The country’s seismically active location, straddling the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, makes it prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Regional governments in some cities, such as on Ternate and Tidore, the historic Spice Islands, were urged to prepare citizens for evacuation.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The earthquake and subsequent tsunami warnings have raised concerns about the region’s preparedness for natural disasters. As a neighbour to Indonesia, Australia is also at risk of being affected by tsunamis and earthquakes.
Security analysts say that the region’s seismic activity is a reminder of the importance of having robust disaster response plans in place.
Law enforcement insiders warn that the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters also makes it a hotspot for criminal activity, including looting and fraud. “In the aftermath of a disaster, it’s essential to have a strong police presence to maintain order and prevent opportunistic crimes,” said one expert.
Industry observers believe that the earthquake and tsunami warnings will also have economic implications for the region.
“The impact on trade and tourism will be significant, and it’s essential for governments and businesses to work together to mitigate the effects,” said an industry expert.
As the region continues to respond to the earthquake and tsunami warnings, one thing is clear: the importance of disaster preparedness and response cannot be overstated.
With the region’s history of seismic activity, it’s essential for governments, businesses, and individuals to be prepared for the worst.
