It was supposed to be just another ordinary morning commute to work for Rooney Taua, a 61-year-old father and husband from Banksia Grove. But in an instant, tragedy struck, leaving his family and community reeling in shock.
Taua was a passenger on a Transperth bus that crashed into a tree on Joondalup Dr, in the northern Perth suburb of Wanneroo, just after 11am on Thursday.
Taua suffered critical injuries in the crash and was rushed to hospital, but sadly died overnight.
His family has been left to pick up the pieces, remembering him as a “beloved husband”, a “devoted father” to his daughter, a cherished son, and a respected koro — or Maori elder.
As the investigation into the crash continues, witnesses have described the chaotic scenes that unfolded. The bus veered into lanes of oncoming traffic before slamming into the tree, with many rushing to help before ambulances arrived.
“I’ve noticed some women straight away going into the lane and doing CPR on this gentleman,” said Tia Anderson, who was driving behind the bus before it crashed.
The crash triggered a major response from emergency services, with a 59-year-old woman taken to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition. Five others, including the 56-year-old male bus driver, were taken to hospital with less severe injuries.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti confirmed that the police are investigating whether a medical episode caused the crash, with CCTV footage from inside the bus to be examined.
“This is a horrific incident, accident. The police are now investigating the full circumstances,” she said.
As the community comes to terms with the tragedy, Taua’s family has thanked those who assisted at the accident scene and cared for him. They hope to repatriate his body to his native New Zealand for a traditional burial.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The crash has raised concerns about the safety of public transport in Western Australia, with many calling for greater investment in road safety measures. “This incident highlights the need for increased funding for road safety initiatives, particularly in rural areas,” said a transport expert.
Others have pointed to the importance of supporting families affected by road trauma.
“The impact of this tragedy will be felt for years to come, and it’s essential that we provide adequate support to those affected,” said a road safety advocate.
Law enforcement insiders warn that the investigation into the crash will be complex and thorough, with multiple factors to be considered.
“The police will be examining all aspects of the crash, including the driver’s health, the condition of the bus, and the road conditions,” said a police spokesperson.
As the community mourns the loss of Rooney Taua, his family’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of road trauma on families and communities.
