- Community in shock as Hania’s family and friends mourn her tragic death, with many still believing she will return to class

The small community of Kewdale in Perth is reeling in shock after the tragic death of 9-year-old Hania Ahmed, who was gunned down by Pakistani police in a case of mistaken identity.
Hania was visiting her relatives in the Punjab province of Chakwal with her family when the horrific incident occurred. Her brother, 11, and father, Adeel Ahmed, 39, were also injured in the shooting.
According to the Crime Control Department (CCD) of the Punjab Police, officers intervened after armed robbers allegedly stopped the family’s rental car and took them at gunpoint.
However, the CCD claims that the suspects shot at police first, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
In the ensuing chaos, a police officer mistakenly assumed the victims’ vehicle was attempting to flee and opened fire, killing Hania and injuring her father and brother.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese demanding a proper and transparent investigation into the ‘dire’ circumstances surrounding Hania’s death. ‘My heart goes out to the family and friends and indeed the Pakistan-Australian community will be really feeling this,’ Albanese said.
‘A nine-year-old girl visiting Pakistan with her family should have been a time of joy.’
The Pakistani Association of WA has offered its support to the family, saying the community is in mourning. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is also providing consular assistance to the family.
The CCD has admitted that the shooting ‘constitutes a complete deviation from our established standard operating procedures and the legal principles governing the use of force.’ One officer involved has been suspended, arrested, and remanded to judicial custody, and their weapon and spent shell casings have been collected for processing.
As the community struggles to come to terms with the tragedy, Hania’s school, the Australian Islamic College Perth, held a service for her on Friday.
Teachers and classmates remembered her as a ‘very happy, bubbly girl, very friendly.’ Parents say students are devastated, with many still believing she will return to class.
‘It’s just really tragic at the moment, especially for the family. It’s been horrific,’ one parent said.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The death of Hania Ahmed has raised serious concerns about the safety of Australian citizens traveling abroad, particularly in countries with high crime rates.
The incident highlights the need for Australian authorities to work closely with their international counterparts to ensure that citizens are protected and that justice is served in cases of wrongful death.
Security analysts say that the incident underscores the risks faced by Australians traveling to countries with high levels of crime and corruption. ‘This tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers that Australians can face when traveling abroad,’ one analyst said.
‘It’s essential that we have robust mechanisms in place to protect our citizens and ensure that those responsible for such incidents are held accountable.’
The incident also raises questions about the training and accountability of police officers in countries like Pakistan, where corruption and human rights abuses are widespread.
Law enforcement insiders warn that the lack of transparency and accountability in such cases can lead to a breakdown in trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
As the Australian government demands justice for Hania’s family, it’s clear that this tragedy will have far-reaching implications for Australia’s relations with Pakistan and the broader region.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges of international diplomacy and the need for Australian authorities to be vigilant in protecting the rights and safety of its citizens abroad.
