The usually quiet streets of Bentley in Perth’s south-east were left reeling on Tuesday morning after a devastating family violence incident left a mother dead and her young daughter fighting for life.
A 16-year-old boy, the son of the deceased and brother of the injured girl, is in police custody and is assisting police with their inquiries.
According to WA Police, the woman’s body was found at a residence on Mills Street in Bentley around 6.25am.
The 12-year-old girl was found injured about 600 metres away along Albany Highway in Cannington and was taken to hospital with suspected stab wounds.
The house has been cordoned off as police investigate the suspected homicide.
Detective Acting Inspector Jessica Securo said the girl managed to escape the residence after she was allegedly stabbed by her brother. “So she was injured at the Mills Street residence as well and she’s been able to flee that area and contact police,” she said.
Inspector Securo thanked members of the public who called the ambulance and provided the girl with “life-saving care”.
Police have set up two crime scenes, one at the Mills Street residence and another in Cannington where the girl was found injured. Investigators will examine all available evidence and speak with relevant witnesses in recognition of the “confronting” nature of the incident.
