A former New South Wales Liberal Party member of parliament, Jeremy Kinross, 65, died unexpectedly in Thailand on Saturday night after choking on corn kernels, according to local reports.
Kinross was found unconscious outside a supermarket in Phuket’s Cape Panwa area by a passer-by, who alerted authorities.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The exact duration of Kinross’s stay in Thailand before his death remains unknown. The Royal Thai Police have yet to confirm the incident.
Kinross, a barrister and accountant by training, served as the Member for Gordon in the NSW Legislative Assembly for six and a half years until the seat was abolished in 1999 due to redistribution.
After leaving politics, he worked as a consultant specializing in strategic relationships and change management.
In a statement, the NSW Liberal Party expressed shock and sadness at Kinross’s untimely passing, remembering him for his significant contributions to the business sector and his time as Member for Gordon.
“He will be greatly missed,” the party said.
Current Member for Davidson Matt Cross paid tribute to Kinross, describing him as a “larger than life character” who still knew many locals by first name.
Cross recalled Kinross’s advice to him: “Make every day count.”
Those wishing to offer their condolences or share memories of Jeremy Kinross can reach out to the NSW Liberal Party or local authorities in Phuket.
