A night of revelry turned into a scene of utter chaos on the Sunshine Coast when a car ploughed into a group of pedestrians, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake. The incident occurred just before midnight on Saturday on Aerodrome Rd in Maroochydore, where a white Toyota Yaris mounted a curb and struck eight people.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, where they found a 23-year-old NSW woman with significant injuries. She was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital before being airlifted to Brisbane in a life-threatening condition. A teenage boy, assessed with potentially life-threatening head injuries, was also taken to hospital, along with two other teenage boys who suffered minor injuries.
“It was like something out of a horror movie,” a witness described the terrifying scene. “The car just came out of nowhere and hit the pedestrians. It was like the driver didn’t even care.”
Police said the driver, a 38-year-old Maroochydore man, fled the scene in his car following the crash. However, his freedom was short-lived, as he was found by police a short time later at a nearby address and taken into custody.
Investigations are ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to come forward. As the community struggles to come to terms with the shocking incident, one thing is certain – the victims and their families will never forget this horrific night.
