The disappearance of a five-year-old girl from her home in Alice Springs has sparked a massive police operation, with fears she may have been abducted.
Sharon Granites was reported missing by her family on Sunday morning, and police are now searching for a 47-year-old man who was staying at the same address and has also gone missing.
Jefferson Lewis, who was recently released from prison, is believed to have a “peripheral link” to Sharon’s family, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
According to police, Sharon was last seen by her family when she was put to bed on Saturday night, but when her mother went to check on her at around 1:30am on Sunday, she was nowhere to be found.
An initial search of the area was launched, but as the hours ticked by with no sign of Sharon, police became increasingly concerned. “It’s a very broad investigation at this stage where we’re not ruling out anything,” Acting Superintendent Michael Ordelman said on Sunday.
“We don’t know if she has access to water. There’s some areas she may have gone to find water, but the increasing passage of time is concerning.”
As the search for Sharon continues, police are also appealing for information about Mr Lewis, who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.
“He’s the only person that we haven’t been able to locate and speak to who was in and around that area at the time,” Acting Commander Mark Grieve said.
“Considering himself and Sharon went missing at around about the same time, it certainly brings about those suspicious circumstances and we’d like to speak to him about that.”
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The disappearance of Sharon Granites has sent shockwaves through the community in Alice Springs, and has raised concerns about the safety of children in the region.
The fact that police are now treating her disappearance as an abduction has sparked fears about the potential for child exploitation and trafficking in the area.
Security analysts say that the case highlights the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to prevent such incidents in the future.
Law enforcement insiders warn that the case may also have implications for the way that police respond to missing persons cases in remote and Indigenous communities.
“The fact that police were initially unsure about whether Sharon had wandered off or been taken highlights the challenges of responding to missing persons cases in these areas,” one insider said.
“It’s a complex issue that requires a coordinated and culturally sensitive approach.”
As the search for Sharon continues, the community in Alice Springs is holding out hope that she will be found safe and well. Anyone with information about her disappearance or the whereabouts of Jefferson Lewis is urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number P26120934.
Industry observers believe that the case may also have economic and social consequences for the region, particularly if it is found that Sharon was the victim of a serious crime.
“The impact on the local community will be significant, and it’s likely that there will be a ripple effect on the local economy,” one observer said.
“It’s a tragic reminder of the need for increased investment in community safety and support services in these areas.”
