‘Unrelenting Terror’: Russia Unleashes Devastating Missile Strike on Kyiv, Killing One and Injuring Dozens as Ukraine Teeters on Brink of Chaos
- Hundreds of civilians seek shelter in metro stations as drones and missiles rain down on Ukraine’s capital, leaving a trail of destruction and debris
- Residential buildings and a school are left in ruins, with reports of fires and widespread panic
- Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy had warned of an impending attack, citing intelligence from Ukraine, the US, and Europe
- Russia’s use of the feared Oreshnik missile sparks international condemnation, with leaders calling it “escalatory and unacceptable”
The early hours of Sunday morning brought terror to the streets of Kyiv as Russia unleashed a devastating missile strike, killing one person and injuring at least three.
The attack, which came without warning, sent hundreds of civilians fleeing for cover in local metro stations, desperate to escape the hail of drones and missiles that rained down on the city.
As the city struggled to come to terms with the scale of the destruction, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko took to Telegram to confirm that several residential buildings had been damaged, with debris on fire at a school premises in the city centre.
The images of destruction and chaos that emerged in the aftermath of the attack served as a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict.
The strike came hot on the heels of a warning from Ukraine’s air force, which had cautioned that Russia might launch a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy had also sounded the alarm on Saturday, citing intelligence from Ukraine, the US, and Europe that suggested Russia was preparing to launch a strike using the feared missile.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has long boasted about the capabilities of the Oreshnik missile, claiming it is impossible to intercept due to its reported velocity of more than 10 times the speed of sound.
Ukraine has previously been hit twice by the Oreshnik missile, first in November 2024, and again in January 2026.
The latest attack is believed to be a retaliatory strike, following a Ukrainian attack on a student dorm in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine overnight on Saturday.
The head of the Russian-installed administration in the Luhansk region reported that 18 people had been killed in the strike, with a further 48 injured and 10 still unaccounted for.
Following the January attack, leaders in Britain, France, and Germany condemned Russia’s use of the Oreshnik ballistic missile as “escalatory and unacceptable”. The international community is once again bracing for a potential escalation of the conflict, as Ukraine teeters on the brink of chaos.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The latest developments in the Ukraine-Russia conflict have significant implications for Australia, particularly in terms of national security.
As a key player in the global community, Australia must navigate the complex web of international relations and alliances in order to protect its interests and ensure the safety of its citizens.
Security analysts say that the use of advanced missiles like the Oreshnik poses a significant threat to global stability, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
“The fact that Russia is willing to use such a powerful and indiscriminate weapon in a conflict zone is a worrying sign for the international community,” one expert noted.
“It highlights the need for Australia to maintain a strong and capable military, as well as to engage in diplomatic efforts to prevent the spread of conflict.”
Law enforcement insiders warn that the conflict in Ukraine also has implications for Australia’s domestic security.
“The use of drones and missiles in the conflict has the potential to inspire extremists and terrorists around the world, including in Australia,” one source said.
“It’s essential that our law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and proactive in preventing and responding to potential threats.”
