The Love Machine nightclub, a notorious Melbourne institution, has been left in ruins after a suspicious fire tore through the buiin lding the early hours of Thursday morning.
The blaze, which police are treating as highly suspicious, has raised concerns about the risk to public safety and the potential for further violence.
The fire, which engulfed the two-storey building on the corner of Chapel St and Commercial Rd in Prahran, was discovered by police who patrol the area nightly.
A witness also called triple-0 to report a loud bang and a light-coloured hatchback leaving the scene around the same time. Huge flames were seen leaping from the top of the building as dozens of fire trucks rushed to the scene.
Firefighters used aerial booms to attack the fire from above, with crews still on site this morning and smoke continuing to billow from the building. Miraculously, the club was empty at the time of the blaze, and no one was injured.
However, the building was “completely destroyed” and some of the surrounding buildings are expected to have suffered damage as well.
The Love Machine nightclub has a chequered history, having been the scene of a double fatal shooting in 2019 and facing trouble with liquor licensing authorities for exceeding patronage limits.
The venue has also been linked to numerous brawls and fights involving bikies. The recent attack has raised concerns about the potential for further violence and the impact on the local community.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The destruction of the Love Machine nightclub has significant implications for public safety and law enforcement in Melbourne. The suspicious fire has raised concerns about the potential for further violence and the risk to innocent lives.
Security analysts say that the attack highlights the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between authorities to prevent such incidents in the future.
Law enforcement insiders warn that the attack on the nightclub is a symptom of a broader problem, with organized crime groups increasingly using violence and intimidation to exert control over local communities.
The incident has also raised concerns about the impact on local businesses and residents, with the potential for increased insurance premiums and a decline in community confidence.
Industry observers believe that the attack on the Love Machine nightclub is a wake-up call for authorities to take a tougher stance on organized crime and to work more closely with local communities to prevent such incidents in the future.
Victoria Police Detective Inspector Chris Murray said police were “obviously” treating the fire as highly suspicious given the circumstances of the incident and the history of the club.
“Noting this was a deliberate act, we will keep an open mind as to why this has occurred,” he said. “The behaviour of these offenders is nothing short of frightening.
Businesses and livelihoods are being destroyed, landlords’ insurance premiums are skyrocketing, and the reality is that we could have had a number of people killed as a result of this fire.”
Malvern Rd in Prahran remains closed to traffic and trams in both directions between Chapel St and Surrey Rd, with drivers advised to use alternative routes.
The road closures will also impact trams on route 72, which will divert via Dandenong Rd and Glenferrie Rd. Buses will replace trams along Malvern Rd between Stop 25 Commercial Rd and Stop 43 Glenferrie Rd.
