In a heart-stopping display of desperation, a Sydney man was dragged hundreds of metres by his own car as he tried to stop it being stolen in a brazen daylight attack.
The 43-year-old’s clothes became caught in the passenger front door as the alleged carjacker sped off, forcing him to cling on for dear life as he was dragged almost a kilometre through the streets of Elderslie.
The alleged carjacking occurred on Sunday evening at around 5:30 pm, as the man was leaving a dog park off River Road. The victim, who has not been named, had been walking his dog in the park when the thief struck, making off with his sedan.
In a desperate bid to stop the thief, the man grabbed onto the passenger side of the car, but his clothes became caught in the door, leaving him at the mercy of the speeding vehicle.
As the car sped through the streets, the man was dragged 800 metres before eventually losing his grip outside an Elderslie fruit shop. Stumbling into the store, he was met by shop owners Steven Gugliotti and Chris Oliverio, who were just closing up for the day.
“The man’s walked up here and he was bleeding and he didn’t look well,” Oliverio recalled. “We weren’t obviously sure what was happening but we knew there was obviously a problem,” Gugliotti added.
The pair quickly called Triple-0 and did what they could to help the injured man while they waited for emergency services to arrive. “Gave him a banana, an orange, wasn’t quite sure what was happening,” Oliverio said, describing the chaotic scene.
When paramedics arrived, they worked to stem the bleeding from a leg injury before rushing the man to Liverpool Hospital.
As the man remains in hospital in a stable condition, police are now trying to work out why he was targeted and whether the attack was completely random or something more sinister.
“It’s a dog park. People go there, you know, walk their dog.
It’s a friendly place. You know, it’s bizarre that it’s happened there,” said local resident Danny, who was left shaken by the incident.
“I consider Camden a safe place. So yeah, it breaks my heart when things like this happen,” added another local, Jade.
