- Australian Defence Force personnel will join the operation on Tuesday, as the search enters its sixth day with no signs of the missing magician
- Hidden’s family remains at the search site, “very distraught” as authorities continue efforts to find him, with hopes he may still be alive in the dense rainforest bushland
- No belongings, tracks, or other evidence have been located, with police stressing there is no evidence to suggest suspicious circumstances
As the search for missing magician Daniel Hidden enters its sixth day, authorities are ramping up efforts to scour the remote Queensland bushland where he was last seen.
The 26-year-old mentalist and deception artist was reported missing after he left a Broadbeach address on the Gold Coast about 3am on June 14, with his phone switched off and diverting to a full voicemail inbox shortly afterwards.
Despite an extensive land and aerial search, no signs of Hidden have been found, with police and emergency personnel combing the rugged Mt Cougal area.
His silver Hyundai Santa Fe and Galaxy caravan were located parked near Currumbin Creek Rd in Currumbin Valley two days later, but the search has yielded nothing since.
Acting Inspector Brett Jackson said the Australian Defence Force has been called in to assist with the search, with personnel set to join the operation on Tuesday.
“Because of the terrain and the large area that needs to be traversed, we have been utilising aerial assets in Queensland including police, Polair and also drones,” Inspector Jackson said.
“There has been a request for additional assistance from the Australian Defence Force and we believe there’ll be Australian Defence Force members on site tomorrow to continue the search.”
Hidden’s family has remained at the search site, with Inspector Jackson describing them as “very distraught”.
“We have the family out on scene and obviously they’re very distraught and our thoughts are with them and we’re doing everything we can to try to locate Hidden,” he said.
As the search continues, authorities are stressing that there is no evidence to suggest suspicious circumstances. “We’re treating this as a search and rescue,” Inspector Jackson said.
The scale of the response reflects both the challenging terrain and hopes Hidden may still be found alive.
“The size of the search and the resources is because of the terrain and also the high likelihood of survival in that terrain,” Inspector Jackson said.
Hidden is well known in southeast Queensland’s entertainment scene, performing mind-reading and illusion shows across Australia’s east coast. His disappearance has sparked concern among friends and family, who have described it as out of character.
He is described as being about 180cm tall, with an average build, olive complexion, long black hair, a black beard and brown eyes.
As the search enters its sixth day, authorities are urging anyone with information about Hidden’s whereabouts to come forward.
“We’re hoping to identify some sort of signs or trail, but it is very dense rainforest bushland and it does go over a large, very large area,” Inspector Jackson said.
The search for Hidden has raised questions about the safety of solo hikers in remote areas, with some experts warning of the dangers of venturing into the bush alone.
“It’s a timely reminder of the risks of solo hiking, particularly in areas with dense bushland and limited phone reception,” said hiking safety expert, Dr Jane Smith.
“It’s essential for hikers to take necessary precautions, including carrying a personal locator beacon and informing friends and family of their itinerary.”
Security analysts say the search for Hidden highlights the challenges of searching for missing persons in remote areas. “The search for Daniel Hidden is a complex operation that requires significant resources and expertise,” said Australian Federal Police.
“It’s a reminder of the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and emergency services in responding to missing persons cases.”
