In a heart-stopping moment that has left a nation in shock, a young Brazilian student’s life was brutally cut short in a bungee jump gone horribly wrong.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, just 21, was thrown off the Ponte do Esqueleto, or “Skeleton Bridge”, in Limeria, Sao Paulo State, without a rope attached to her feet.
The incident, which was captured on video and shared on social media, has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about the safety measures in place at the popular tourist destination.
According to eyewitnesses, Freitas was carried to the edge of the concrete block by three male instructors, who appeared to forget to attach the rope to her feet.
The rope can be seen coiled on the ground in the disturbing footage, which shows the instructors hurling Freitas off the bridge as shocked onlookers watch on in horror.
Despite some witnesses shouting “the rope, people, the rope”, no one attempts to stop the jump from going ahead.
Off-duty nurse Rayza Dias was at the scene and risked her own life to scramble down the steep cliff to reach Freitas. Speaking to local Brazilian TV show Domingo Espetacular, Dias described the harrowing moment she reached the student.
“I scraped my whole hand because there’s a steep slope down there and only one rope for us to climb down,” she said. “It was all covered in mud.
I kept going down, down, we walked all the way.”
Dias, who was not on duty at the time, attempted to comfort Freitas, who was still alive when she reached her. “I even talked to her,” Dias said.
“I have a habit of joking and saying, ‘Nobody dies on my shift’. And I told her, ‘Duda (Eduarda), nobody dies on my shift’.
Even though I wasn’t on my shift there.” Tragically, despite Dias’s best efforts, Freitas could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene by the time paramedics arrived.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in Brazil, with many calling for greater safety measures to be put in place at the popular tourist destination.
The three male instructors, Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, 27, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, have been arrested and charged with homicide with implied malice, according to Brazilian news outlet G1.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
While the incident occurred in Brazil, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict safety measures and rigorous regulation in the adventure tourism industry.
In Australia, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of bungee jumping and other high-risk activities, with many calling for greater oversight and regulation.
“This tragic incident highlights the need for strict safety protocols and rigorous training for operators in the adventure tourism industry,” said a spokesperson for the Australian Tourism Industry Council.
“We will be closely monitoring the investigation and working with our members to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in Australia.”
Security analysts say that the incident also raises concerns about the potential for human error and the importance of having multiple safety checks in place. “This incident is a stark reminder that even with the best safety protocols in place, human error can still occur,” said a security expert.
“It’s essential that operators have multiple safety checks in place and that staff are properly trained to respond in emergency situations.”
As the investigation into the incident continues, it remains to be seen what long-term consequences will arise from this tragedy.
One thing is certain, however – the incident will have a lasting impact on the adventure tourism industry and will serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safety and regulation.
