In a stunning breakthrough, a mobile phone belonging to missing Belgian tourist Celine Cremer has been found in the Tasmanian wilderness, two years after her mysterious disappearance. The 31-year-old was last seen in the Philosopher Falls area near Cradle Mountain on June 17, 2023.
Cremer’s Samsung phone was discovered on Saturday by a private search party consisting of four of her friends who had travelled from Belgium, along with local volunteers. The group’s tireless efforts have finally yielded a crucial piece of evidence in the case, which has left authorities baffled for months.
Police have confirmed the device belongs to Cremer and are now subjecting it to forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation. The breakthrough comes after extensive searches of the treacherous terrain and challenging weather conditions had yielded nothing.
“A police search controller is working closely with the private search party to ensure safety and that any discoveries are managed appropriately,” police said in a statement. “Police remain in close contact with Celine’s family and we will continue to assess any new information in a bid to provide them with answers and closure.”
Cremer was reported missing by her family on June 26, 2023, nine days after she was last seen. Her car, a white Honda CRV, was found in the falls’ car park a day after the missing persons’ report was filed. Police believed the vehicle had been there for at least a week.
The renewed private search began on Saturday, and Tasmania Police say they are supporting the effort. The discovery of Cremer’s phone has sparked hope that the mystery of her disappearance may finally be solved.
